Recently, a ceremony was held at the Zero Kilometer Point in Ambodifasina to mark the opening of the first section of Madagascar’s first-ever highway — the “Autoroute Reliant 1(Antananarivo to Toamasina)” (AR1). President Rajoelina personally inaugurated the highway and, together with dignitaries from various countries, rode in a motorcade of FOTON buses as part of the first convoy to travel on the new expressway.
The highway inauguration ceremony was a key official event of the 45th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, drawing the attendance of numerous national leaders and senior representatives from SADC member states.The spotlight of the ceremony was a fleet of zero-emission buses from BAIC FOTON, which transported the dignitaries. The use of these vehicles underscored Madagascar’s strong commitment to energy transition and sustainable green development.
The BAIC FOTON pure electric buses used for this event are part of a 312-unit order delivered to Madagascar by BAIC FOTON in 2025.Since the official handover at the Antananarivo Convention Center on June 24, the fleet has been gradually rolled out. The first 42 buses hit the streets of the capital during National Day celebrations on June 26, while 12 units served as official transport for dignitaries during the SADC Summit, showcasing the outstanding quality and technological innovation of “intelligent manufacturing in China” to leaders from across Africa.
To ensure flawless vehicle performance during the summit and the highway inauguration ceremony, BAIC FOTON dispatched a dedicated team of 10 senior service experts to remain on-site and provide comprehensive, high-standard support. Prior to the event, the team conducted thorough inspections of all vehicles, prepared spare parts in advance, and delivered one-on-one driver training. During the summit, they carried out daily pre-departure checks before 7 a.m., nighttime return inspections, and real-time on-site monitoring. With a “zero-error” commitment, the team successfully fulfilled their transportation support mission—earning high praise from all attendees.
